Among other HPI students I got the chance to try out the iPod within the framework of the iPod4Education program. The experience was great partly because of the broad selection of educational podcasts to choose from, partly because of the enjoyability of use of the device itself. The idea to use purposefully the time, which is otherwise is just wasted (like timespans while waiting in the queues or travelling with public transport), is what makes the whole thing work awesome. I was so happy to able to fill this “wasted” time with some meaninfull activity and the realization that you are actually studying while waiting at the busstop for the next bus makes you feel great.
Being the foreign student studying in Germany I still have making advances in German language as one of my greatest concerns. That is why the podcasts, which I subscribed to, were from Deutsche Welle (dw-world.de) for people learning German language. These include - Stichwort (short, at foremost couple-minutes-long recordings of professional actor reading out various expressions with one specific word, which illustrate difference in meaning, use of collocations, literal and figural meanings, etc) and Top-Thema mit Vocabeln (short texts on current world affairs, which are aimed at illustrating the use of some specific vocabulary, really good for people interested in aquiring the “feeling” of how German language works). I really enjoyed those podcasts, the only drawback that I can see in using IPod for learning somenew language is that sometimes, when it gets a bit noisy outside or in transport it gets hard to listen for new words
also it would be great if I could edit my podcasts playlists and reorganize them without iTunes, directly on the iPod.

Like many others before, I participated in the “iPod4Education” program of Prof. Plattner’ s chair. During the 4 weeks I looked for educational audio and video podcast. Now I would like to recommend some interesting content in the context of mobile teaching.
But first I want to introduce a nice extension for the iPod. If you have iPod mini, 3G or 4G, it is possible to install a dump of the Wikipedia encyclopedia.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_iPod#Wikipedia_auf_dem_iPod
http://encyclopodia.sourceforge.net/de/index.html
The dump is available in German, English and Italian. It is realized over a second operating system on Linux basis. The startup routine offers a choice between Wikipedia and the native iPod system. No change of the firmware is necessary. This compact encyclopedia is very useful. Especially on travelling you need sometimes information about a country, city or sight, but there is no possibility to get internet access.
A recommendable Podcast is the “Software Engineering Radio” – Podcast. The team of this podcast discusses one part of software development in each episode. They invent an external expert and talk with him approximately between a half and one hour about software components or Web services for example. Most of their topics are relevant in the context of a computer science study. So this podcast can be a brief introduction to a new issue or keeps you up-to-date.
Furthermore the podcasts produced by GEO and National Geographic provide extensive stuff for mobile teaching.
Summarizing mobile teaching with the combination of iPod and Podcasts is helpful. Within the iTunes-store a large choice of podcast are available and their topics are manifold. While browsing through the podcasts you often find new interesting productions, which helps to avoid boring bus or train rides.

The following describes my experiences with the iPod in the context of
the “iPod4Education” program of Prof. Plattner’s chair at the HPI. The
program aims to increase the quality of education by providing iPods for
mobile learning.
Several other testers have already written about the intuitive handling
of the iPod and the well-designed GUI. As an Apple newbie, I was
impressed by the simplicity of the user interface and found it quite
easy to operate the iPod. Nevertheless, I experienced problems while
carrying the iPod in my trousers. As one of the previous testers has
written, it is sometimes really annoying not to be able to adjust the
volume without taking the iPod out of your pocket. However, the main
drawback of an iPod is the focus on iTunes. It is a major restriction
that I was not able to simply copy mp3s and videos on the player out of
the box (workarounds like rockbox have already been discussed by other
testers).
To answer the question, whether podcasts are a reasonable way to supply
information, I downloaded a wide range of different types of podcasts.
On the one hand, I watched short news reports, for instance the daily
podcasts published by Tagesschau and podcasts offered by HPI. On the
other hand, I searched the web for video podcasts showing interesting
university lectures. As a result, I subscribed to the podcast of a
lecture about the theory of algorithms
(http://ad.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/blogs/podcastAT0607/). This
lecture has been given by Prof. Th. Ottmann at the
Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg in the last winter term and mainly
deals with advanced algorithm concepts, for instance randomized
algorithms or fast fourier transform algorithms.
While the short news reports can be watched with an iPod in a
comfortable way, a video lecture needs getting used to. Depending on the
manner in which the lecturer explains a certain topic, these lectures
can be a little bit long-winded. Addressing this issue, some videos of
the above mentioned podcast have also been published in 1,2x and 1,4x
speed. Another aspect is the readability of slides and hand-written
notes. In the video podcasts I tested, the text was often very small.
Although I could read the whole text, it was very exhausting in the long
run.
Consequently, I would recommend the iPod especially for short reports.
Videos up to 20 minutes presenting content in a compact way could be a
good way to support the teaching at university. Thus, these videos
should contain only summaries and not whole lectures. Nevertheless, I
would not recommend providing podcasts of extensive discussions of
complex issues in lectures, as it is hard to concentrate on the small
display for more than half an hour. Another possible field of
application could be the presentation of research projects, which can
often be done in up to 20 minutes. The presentation of one bachelor
project team at the HPI already showed, how such a presentation could
look like.

As other testers already wrote, the handling of the iPod is very good, especially the intuitively operated GUI. The image quality of the videos is great, though regrettably too small for viewing lectures (for example for recognizing notices on the blackboard or on the Powerpoint sheets of the Tele-Task lectures of Prof. Meinel.) I could watch very well small podcasts like news or reports about the international IT convention at the HPI. Viewing them has considerably shortened the felt duration of the morning’s running time to Berlin for my bachelor project.
One downside of the iPod is that one has to use iTunes in order to download data to it. I could not play-back directly downloaded data. But data downloaded with iTunes would not copy to other media. It was impossible to create structured files for music or to compile playlists.
In order to by-pass such difficulties I had installed an alternative operating system called Rockbox that avoids these handicaps. (For more informations see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockbox). The GUI is less good and the handling is somewhat unfamiliar in view of the original operating system but Rockbox solves all the above problems. Due to the shortness of the use I was unable to field test it satisfactory. Although I did not succeed in viewing videos up to now, I am convinced that that will be possible because I especially selected the software version for iPod Video. Maybe that that feature is not already included as up to today, because there only exists the beta version of the software. Although there were no system crashes until now. The software seems to run soundly.
—–Edited on 25th on February 2007—–
Additional comment to my field test with the iPod:
I’ve tested the iPod for 4 more weeks. Therefore, it’s possible for me to write some more detailed information about using the Rockbox operating system (OS) instead of the original firmware.
After I bypassed the first difficulties with the unknown controls, the Rockbox OS was as easy to handle as the original firmware. As I wrote in the main article a huge advantage of Rockbox OS is that you don’t have to use some special software like iTunes to download songs on the iPod. With Rockbox you’re able to use the iPod just as a hard disk when adding or deleting songs or videos to or from the iPod. So, you’ve got your songs in their own folders on your iPod as mp3 or wav files however you want to. But it’s also no problem to use your song collection which you had downloaded with iTunes before Rockbox was installed. Therefore Rockbox supports a function “import iTunes database” with which you can create a database file that is understandable for Rockbox OS. Unfortunately it takes always a few seconds to find the next random song in this database file, so there is a break from one song to the next one. Alternatively you can load the database file into the RAM of the iPod on start-up, which helps to minimize the waiting time, but sadly that makes booting of Rockbox much more power consuming.
A huge disadvantage of the current version of Rockbox for “iPod video” is that the user is not able to play videos on his or her iPod. Surely that is only a short-time problem, because the first version of Rockbox for “iPod video” exists only for 1.5 month and therefore there is only a daily build (not a release one). This is a barricade for changing your operating system to Rockbox at this time. Fortunately, there is a workaround for this problem. The installation of Rockbox comes with a boot loader, which allows for choosing the operating system on start-up. Therefore, if you want to watch a video on your iPod, boot with the original firmware and everything will be as if Rockbox wasn’t even installed.
Recapitulating, Rockbox is a real alternative for the original firmware. But everyone has to trade off the advantages and the disadvantages of changing the operating system for his own. My recommendation is: Try Rockbox! The installation and un-installation are quite simple so that you don’t have to spend much time to make your own experiences with Rockbox.

In the context of the “iPod4Education” program Prof. Plattners chair is offering iPods on a rental base. The iPod shall increase quality of education and mobility of teaching. This report describes the experiences, I made in one month mobile teaching.
Usability and design are two Apple’s major concerns. These concepts are perfectly applied on the iPod. It is nice designed and the user interface provides a wide range of innovative ideas. After a few experiments and a few minutes of confusion, one had learnt to use the iPod perfectly. Only two issues are disturbing the outstanding user interface. On the one hand the “spinning wheel”, used for selecting items, could be a little more precise. Sometimes the selection bar flips in the last moment to the next line and you are selecting the wrong item. The second issue is the lack of trouser pocket usability. It is de-facto impossible to control the iPod when you use it as mp3 player in your pocket. If you want to skip to the next track, you have to get the iPod out of your pocket, switch the hold button, skip to the next track, switch the hold button again, and put the iPod back into your pocket. The buttons of other mp3 players can be accessed within the pocket of your trouser.
Okay, now you have your iPod. But how can you put your music, videos or what ever on it? Sure, you can load it up with your usual shell (for instance Windows Explorer). But in this case, you can not hear your music or view your videos. Apple invented a really weired system of folders and files which sense I could not completely determine. They created folders with unreadable names and scramble your files. Copying files to your iPod only is an appropriate way to store raw data on it. But if you want to hear mp3s, you must use an iPod management software. The most popular one is iTunes. iTunes allows users to upload (but not to download) and manage your media files on an iPod. Other management tools can be found in the web. iTunes itself deals with most formats but does allow you to upload just a particular one. On http://www.any-dvd-converter.com/ you can find a converter for almost all video types.
Due to the fact, the iPod has a storage capacity of 30 GB, it is possible to save many lectures and personal stuff (for instance papers or presentations) on it. So the iPod is not only a “big mp3- player” but an external hard disk. One of the most interesting possibilities, the iPod offers, is to increase mobility with out-of-the-box startable programs, like miranda. You can take your whole instant messaging client with you. Just plug it on a computer and start messaging.
iTunes offers you a wide range of lectures as Podcasts available on the web. In general, there are two different kinds of them. Those with slides and those without slides. Lectures without slides behave like recorded speeches. You can make notes while hearing them so they are good for studying at home (if you have no Internet access). The other type of lectures comes with slides which are showed simultaneously. The slides are flipped automatically when the speaker progresses. Obviously, the iPod offers less space for these slides because they are shown just in thumbnail size. So it is impossible to even read the words on the slide. The iPod is optimal for hearing a lecture a second time on your way home from university but can not replace to visit the lecture in the first place.
At last it follows a selection of cool Podcasts which can be found in iTunes…
- language courses
- Notes in Spanish
- speeches of Hasso Plattner (just search for “HPI” in iTunes)
- Quarks & Co

In conclusion, it has to be said that the iPod is well designed product. At most the enormous storage capacity increases mobility. The iPod is an additional help for the study but it will surely not empty class rooms. Additionally, it may extend ones interests besides the study with the broad variety of available Podcasts. One good example may be language courses.

In the context of the program “iPod4Education” at the chair “Enterprise Platforms & Integration Concepts” of Mr. Professor Dr. Plattner, an iPod was placed at my disposal. The task was to figure out up to which degree the iPod is applicable for mobile learning. In addition to that the possibility was provided to download special events such as lectures, presentations and interviews in order to watch them whenever wanted.
My first experiences with the iPod are connected with the unpacking and the installation. Surprised by the efficiency, not only of the packaging, but also of the user interface I assumed the already heard general opinions about equipment by Apple to be true. Often I searched vainly for submenus or additional option dialogues. On the one hand usability is facilitated but on the other hand a bit of flexibility is lost. Furthermore one has to deal with proprietary constraints of the package iPod and iTunes. For example it is not possible to copy files directly to the iPod and use them there (such as music or video files) without using iTunes. Moreover the existing folder structures on the hard disk are not taken over when the files are copied to the iPod. Fortunately there are alternative software solutions available such as WinAmp that can circumvent those restrictions. Once there is data on the iPod there is enough entertainment due to the big hard disk capacity even if the trip takes longer than usual.
Besides the podcasts that are provided by the HPI there are also a lot of interesting, free of charge video podcasts in the iTunes Store. Not only that there are also whole lectures from other universities (for example the University of Osnabrück), there are also a lot of science broadcasting (e.g. Quarks and Co.) and economic magazines (e.g. ZDF Wiso) available. These podcasts provide the possibility for students like me, who do not have a television, to look beyond one’s own studies in an enjoyable way. Nevertheless it is relatively exhausting to watch lectures on the iPod. Usually I write down notes and questions during a lecture. Moreover there is often the possibility at the end of the lecture to discuss those questions with the professor. If one is watching the lecture on a computer these option are not given. In addition watching a lecture on the iPod when you are on tour hardly allows taking notes. However the possibilities offered by the iPod can be used to repeat facts that one has already heard. If one has to prepare for examinations or to script the next university exercise it is possible to download the according lecture and watch it as often as wanted and you can pause or rewind it. Nonetheless there is still one drawback. The iPod has only a small display. To watch lecture slides or to even read them is hardly possible, but certainly uncomfortable. In this case it is better to use the according lecture slides. Unfortunately you have to print them out, if you want to stay mobile.
All in all the iPod is an amazing product with many innovative ideas. Due to the rapidly increasing offer of video podcasts on iTunes and in the internet, the iPod video becomes more and more attractive. However for mobile learning it is only suitable to a limited extent for the above mentioned reasons.
